What a Data Breach Actually Costs a Small Business
The breach-cost figures most often quoted do not tell a small-business owner what an incident is likely to cost their company. IBM’s 2026 global average is $4.99 million across organizations of different sizes. Verizon’s 2026 Breach Impact Study found that SMBs with less than $25 million in revenue had a median breach impact of about $38,000. In the most severe 2.5% of cases, losses exceeded 7% of annual revenue.
The cost extends beyond restoring systems. Business interruption, lost revenue, investigation and containment, legal liability, customer notification, and recovery can all add to the final bill.
S.M.A.R.T. Management provides owners with a structured way to manage cybersecurity as a business risk by identifying critical data and systems, assigning responsibilities, testing recovery procedures, and maintaining a response plan.
WEEKLY RECOMMENDATION

This Week's Pick: The I in Team
When something goes wrong, most leaders start by asking whether the instructions were followed. Fewer stop to ask whether the instructions were actually clear in the first place.

Accountability Isn’t Punishment
In this episode of Daily Influence, Brian Smith explores what happens after expectations are discussed and why communication without follow-through rarely leads to meaningful change. Using the S.M.A.R.T. Management framework, Brian explains why expectations should be specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and timely, while emphasizing that accountability is not about punishment. Both the individual and the leader have responsibilities once expectations are established. When leaders establish expectations but fail to follow up, people quickly learn that the standard is optional.
